The only time we were in Spain for more than a few days was in 1970. We spent 6 months in a small town near Barcelona. Franco was still alive but dying. Politics were not spoken of even to relatives. The Guardia Civil were still scary. But I knew change was in the air when I passed a rock concert going on in the Falange party headquarters.<br /><br /> I remember hearing about Juan Carlos who was spoken of as some one who was mediocre even as a playboy. It was already set up that he would become king on Franco’s death, and I remember thinking that with luck he might last six months. Of course, as you pointed out, he turned out to a hero of the rebirth of Spanish democracy. He made the just right move at just the right moment on more than one occasion.
