I think I myself need more doses of the natural world, but maybe that's because I usually live in a more urban spot, without the benefit of Dirk and Whitney's garden.Karlahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09925546212345361041noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4061009.post-28517039024804205082008-11-07T03:23:00.000+01:002008-11-07T03:23:00.000+01:00I found this an elegant and moving essay. I spent several periods of months there as a child, spent a year there when I was going to Columbia, have often visited there since, and have friends and relatives there. Sadly in recent decades I find myself there less, but it is always a thrill when I walk down a Manhattan street. I have many friends who like to go camping or hiking or take long walks in the numerous parks of the Bay Area, and I can enjoy that. But where I most like to walk is in cityscapes, especially New York, San Francisco, Paris, Amsterdam, Varanasi, Barcelona, Stockholm, …. I find myself unable to stop adding to the list. I like these kind of walks because everything I see was made by a human, meant something to him or her, is the way it is for intriguing if sometimes unguessable human reasons.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4061009.post-88372849171653298562008-10-30T04:28:00.000+01:002008-10-30T04:28:00.000+01:00I guess I hadn't realized you were moving to Spain...I guess I hadn't realized you were moving to Spain in such a permanent way. Maybe it was because Susana had just done a big remodel last time I visited that I supposed you'd keep the NY place.

Of course, if I stopped by the blog more often, I might be clearer on these things, but dissertations have their way of eating one's life. We think I'll be defending in December.

It is a bit weird to think of 45 years away from school. I found it unsettling enough when it got to be 30 years since I went off to college. Still, we've done pretty well and we've both got novels to revise. Let me know sometime what your latest is about... I've been a bad correspondent.Karlahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09925546212345361041noreply@blogger.com
